Civic engagement is vital to the field public health and also is an important social determinant of health. For example, higher rates of civic engagement are associated with lower rates of cancer, heart disease, and depression. In the context of public health, civic engagement refers to promoting quality of life with a community through a variety of means. This scholarship was established and funded by an anonymous donor to honor Walter R. Duhn by assisting graduate students in their academic journey within the Department of Public Health.
