Biosketch:

Dr. Daniela Rubin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology. She obtained her Teaching Degree in Physical Education in her home-country Argentina. She graduated at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a M.A. in Exercise and Sport Science in the Specialization of Exercise Physiology in 2001, and with a PhD in Human Movement Sciences in 2005. While completing her studies she was involved with patient education at the Diabetes Clinic, community interventions for at risk youth in Chapel Hill, and a service learning program for Latino youth. After completing her doctorate, she stayed at UNC as a Visiting Assistant Professor where she was involved as a co-investigator in a multi-site center diabetes prevention trial in the middle schools working with physical activity and behavior (Studies to Prevent Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes). At UNC she taught human physiology, exercise physiology and laboratory assessment. Since she is at CSUF she was involved in the evaluation of an after-school program developed by Dr. Wiersma (Active Kids) and she is currently involved in three collaborations (see below). She is involved with the Diabetes Exercise and Sport Association, has been a member of American College of Sports Medicine, the North American Society for Pediatric Exercise Medicine, and The Prader-Willi Syndrome USA Association. She is an active member of the Center for the Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles and Obesity Prevention.

Interest Areas:

Dr. Rubin is interested in the physiologic responses to exercise or the lack of it in children and adolescents, the role of physical activity in the prevention of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and hormonal responses to exercise in youth and adults.

Current Projects:

Dr. Rubin is the principal investigator for California State University Fullerton in a project funded through the Medical Research Programs of the Department of Defense investigating the Nutritional and Exercise Aspects of Prader Willi Syndrome and Childhood Obesity (2008-2010). This project compares the responses to exercise in youth with and without the Prader-Willi Syndrome. In addition, this project is involving parents and caregivers of youth with the Syndrome to understand barriers and motivators to exercise in this syndrome . She is also collaborating with a physician–directed program for overweight youth in Santa Ana, CA Powerplay MD-OC. Last, she is collaborating with the Center for Successful Aging in conducting a study evaluating the role of structured physical activity in older adults on markers of bone and cardiovascular health.
