MSW Program Fact Sheet
Department Philosophy
- Our goal is to prepare students to enter professional, multicultural social work practice. Curricula focus on public child welfare and community mental health.
Admissions Criteria
- Fall admission only
- Bachelor’s degree
- An educational foundation in Liberal Arts/Social Sciences. If you have a bachelor’s degree from either the University of California or the California State University systems, you meet the liberal arts requirement. Click here for more information.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 for the last 60 semester or 90 quarter units
- Three letters of recommendation
- Paid, volunteer, or internship experience relevant to social welfare
- Personal statement
- Writing sample
- Interview with admissions committee
Instructional Modes
- Application of ecological systems model
- Focus on cultural competency, advocacy, and social justice
- Fieldwork in child welfare or community mental health
- Courses in social welfare policy, practice, and research
Length of Program
- 60 units (2 years full-time or 3 years part-time)
Class Schedules
- Typically, full-time students spend two days per week in class on campus and two days per week in a Field Agency.
- Typically, part-time students spend three nights per week in class on campus, plus any fieldwork requirements.
Accreditation
- As of February 2008, the Master of Social Work program is in candidacy for accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
